My manual calls for straight SAE 30 synthetic oil. Will Mobile 1 0w-30 synthetic work? It is for a 4.3 volvo 2007 engine. Are there any negatives to using a 0w-30 instead of a straight SAE 30?

I don't think I'd use the multi vis, it might get too thin at hot idle. Read the manual again, there may be other alternatives, I like the heavy duty straight weights that are also diesel rated like Chevron Delo 400 and Shell Rotella T. Another good one is Pennzoil Marine for 4 stroke engines. The only sources for that syn straight 30 oil are Volvo themselves and Amsoil and in fact the Volvo oil may be made by Amsoil..

MY 08' VP manual states SAE 30 as the first choice. It lists 20w/50 and 15w/50 as alternatives in that order. I think Mercury recommends 20w/40 for their motors.

I definately would NOT use 0w/30 or 10w/30 oil.

I'm running 15W40 fully synthetic in mine with no problems at all. They way I look at it, the Vortec engine (regardless of capacity) is a basically truck motor and they specify a multi vis oil for this application and they manage to do a zillion miles! With regular oil and filter changes I have never heard of a chev engine having lubrication problems - the small block Chev oil circulation system is vastly over designed - in fact they use the V8 oil pump on the V6. So I would have no reservations about running Mobil 1 10W30 at all.

With synthetic oils, the way they work is the 15W40 means it is really a 15 weight (thin) base oil and so behaves like a 15W oil when cold, but at running temperatures the polymers all kick in and it behaves like and gives all the protection of a 40 weight oil at running temperature. Most circuit racers in Oz currently run 15W40 or similar. I raced small block chevs for many years and always used 20W50 mineral oils in those days with no problems at all. Regular engine strip downs showed very little wear depite often 'leaning' on the engine and pushing past redlines... synthetics would be even better.
