Hello, I am a newbie to the site. Does anyone know the length of the shifter cable on a 2003 268 Vista? It has a 5.7 VP Duoprop. I would like to have the new one on hand before remove the existing cable. After reading several threads, this appears to be a common problem for the VP. |

If you look up the cables for the 268 on the four winns parts website, the shift cable is the longer of the two (the last 2 digits refer to the length in feet). If you can get one, I'd really recommend the TFExtreme one. it transformed the shift quality and ease on my VP drive this year. Graham |

Looks like the stock cable is 18'. #041-0172 CABLE, CONTROL 18 #CC17218 (That's a Teleflex part number). You can look up original part numbers at http://www.fourwinns.net/partbook/basem ... l=268V-D03. Before buying, you might see if Teleflex has a Tfxtreme cable for it. People who have them, love them. |

Why did you need to replace the shift cable? |

Like he said, it's a well known issue with these cables, they get stiff and break without warning at an early age. 3 or 4 years is about all you can expect out of the stock cable. When they break, you are stranded. Wise idea to replace his on a 2003. |

Yep, when we bought it. It needed it again when we sold it. |

It was adjusted to the max when we bought it, so I replaced it. After several years it got harder to shift and apply throttle. I would have replaced it this season if we kept the boat. They will fail with very little warning, and it's not worth it to be stranded. It's one of the few things on that boat that you DO NOT follow the old saying, "If it's not broke , don't fix it" Replace before it fails. |

Undo the clamps/ nuts at both ends, ( after removing rear cover on the drive and the shifter from it's panel), attach new cable to old one with duct tape and just pull it through the transom/ rubber tube into the boat and up to the helm. Re- attach clamps and adjust. Graham |

Is this the cable that goes to the outdrive or to the engine, or both? |

Quote: They will fail with very little warning, and it's not worth it to be stranded. That's for sure. Last fall when I put my 268 up for the winter that cable was fine. Launch in the spring and I couldn't hardly shift it. Make it hard to dock that's for sure. Had it changed and couldnt believe how easy it shifted. So mine was on its way out for awhile and I didn't even know it. |

firecadet613 wrote: Is this the cable that goes to the outdrive or to the engine, or both? The throttle cable has a pretty easy life and experiences virtually no load; the shift cable on the other hand has one end that lives in the sea and there are more angle changes. Graham |
