Post subject:  SX outdirve unit ?

Hello Everyone , I'm new to the forum . I have a 1999 Horizon 190 with 267hrs on the clock , the boat has been in brakish water for the past 4yrs and recently pull it out of the water for inspection because I was having some issues with the trim & water slowly sipping in. turned to find out I had seized ram cylinder very corroded outdrive unit as I was moving the
boat form one marina to the other closer to the house to load it up on the trailer the engine shutdown like it hydrolocked, pull it with another boat to the boat ramp when I got it home I pulled all the plugs out and were cleaned no sign of water in the cylinders as I inspect the uotdrive unit the shaft bellow had a sliced on it and water was getting in and appearently the gimbal bearing is seized along with the shaft because I can't pull the unit apart. Here is my question I found a boat with a bad Engine 3.0l at a really reasonable price but it has a 1.97 ratio and mine is a 1.60 with a 5.0L V8 could I be able to use this ratio on with my engine? Could I change the internals out of mine into the 1.97 housing? every suggestion and input to this matter will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks
Gilbert

Gilbert,
Swapping the internals is possible, but only for the brave hearted; there's a lot of shimming, gear lash etc to set up.
There is another possibility; I found this on another forum some years ago.

Upper (SX and DP-S):

3857007 BRP HSG AY,GEAR 22:23 (1.43, 1.51, 1.60, 1.66, 1.68, 1.78, 1.95)
3857010 BRP HSG AY,GEAR 21:26 (1.79, 1.89, 1.97, 2.18, 2.32)

Lower (SX):

3855692 BRP G'CASE AY,SX 19:26 (1.43)
3855693 BRP G'CASE AY,SX 18:26 (1.51 and 1.79)
3855694 BRP G'CASE AY,SX 17:26 (1.60 and 1.89 )
3855695 BRP G'CASE AY,SX 17:27 (1.66 and 1.97 )
3855696 BRP G'CASE AY,SX 17:30 (2.18 only )

To get the final ratio value, multiply both ratios together. So for my 1.79 I have 21:26 and 18:26. So the final ratio is (26*26)/(21*18) = 1.79

The simplest thing you could do is to just unbolt the 1.60 lower unit and simply attach it to the good 1.97 upper drive. The seals that go between the upper and lower units should also be changed. You'll end up with a ratio of 1.66, pretty close to the 1.60.

Hello Graham
This is some great info thank you very mutch , I was playing around with the calculator and I came up with (26*26)/(17*21)=1.89 does this sound right to you and how did you come up with 1.66?

Thanks

Gilbert,

Sorry, You are absolutely right; I made a a mistake in my calculation, don't know how, I'm really sorry to have falsely raised your hopes for a simple fix!

Short of transferring your 1.60 parts over and associated build/ setting up complications, the other thing you could consider is a different prop I suppose.

Graham.

Grahm,

No problem we're only imperfect humans ahd we tend to make mistakes , you dont have to appologize. from a 1.97 to 1.89 is not really that mutch of a gain so I have to find something else even more know that I went to buy the 1.97 unit and to find the guy had gotten rid off it , my luck. maybe it was for the better but I'll thank you for the info you provided that gives me an idea for some choices.
