Hello. I am looking for an used/rebuilt lower unit for an 1995 Cobra OMC 5.0. I was told it needs to have a 1.66 gear ratio but I am having trouble finding info on gear ratio for used units - how important is this? Any suggestions where I could find one and more importantly the how to make sure I get the correct one. THank you much in advance |

Gear ratio is very important. You want to buy an exact replacement of what you have on the boat currently, whatever the ratio may be. Ratio will/can dramatically affect performance. If you do care about performance, hole shot, top end, motor achieving proper RPMs, and motor life, then you may install any ratio you can find. You can re-gear to get the correct ratio, but that will cost another several hundred dollars. |

that's 100% correct, if you check specs you will see that each engine size came with a different drive ratio, the manufacturers would not do that unless they felt it was important enough to justify the cost. The issue is the engine has to be able to develop its specified wide open throttle rpms and if the gear ration is not correct, the boat will not perform right. A 1995 OMC Cobra is the joint venture with Volvo drive meaning that a 1995 Volvo SX will also work on that boat, the drives are the same.... |
