Post subject:  Drive Oil?
What drive oil do you guys recommend? My book sez Volvo Synthetic w/GL-5. It is a Volvo SX drive unit. I am thinking a very good 75w-90 (i.e. Redline, Royal Purple or Amzoil) would be better than the Volvo brand. I personally run Redline in the rear-end of my 900hp drag car and have never had a problem... :wink:

The Volvo is a full synthetic. I'm a big fan of Mobil 1 oils (it's all I use in the cars), but when it comes to the boat I run the Volvo fluids exclusively. I don't know who makes them (certainly it's not Volvo).

I've always changed my own fluids. I've always used Mobil 1 gear lube without issue in all my boats. What I've been told is as long as it's fully synthetic and meets the GL-5 specs it should be okay.

Remember, Volvo does not produce their own fluids and any manufacturer cannot void a warranty for not using their brand as long as the oil being used meets their mininum specifications.

I used Amsoil's synthetic Extreme Pressure Marine 75w-90w in my duo-prop outdrive this time but next time I'll probably just use Mobil 1 like everybody else. Both are excellent lubes. 8)
