I have heard (and learned the hard way with my old boat) that it's good to replace the impellar every 2-3 years. I replaced the impellar on my old Sundower on 4th of July weekend after it quit in the middle of the lake and had to get towed. I spent 4 hours on a Saturday replacing it myself in a Marina's storage barn. I don't want to have that happen again so I am going to replace the impellar on my new vista.

Has anyone done this themself? The boat has a 5.0 GXI volvo. I know where the impellar it's easily accessable. Any adivce or pointers to replacing it?

Piece of cake. Same setup. It's on the front lower left with the two 1.5" lines. Loosen the bar holding the pump from spinning, and remove the 4 screws holding on the front of the pump. I had enough play in the lines that I didn't need to remove them. I also used a cable tie around the new impeller to get the vanes bent in the appropriate direction, Get the impeller started and slip off the cable tie. Make sure you lube it very well with the glycerin included with the impeller.

Replaced my 2004 impeller last summer. The boat was in the middle of it's 3rd season at the time. Impeller showed major signs of wear and would not have been much longer before I would be in your situation, hitched to another boat, smelling their fumes for a Loooong ride. After seeing my worn impeller, i would recommend replacing every 2 seasons or about 100 hrs to be safe.

Follow the directions above as described by [b]jvalich[/b] and you should have no problems, back on the water in no time.

They replace the impeller each year here. Maybe our waters have more sand/silt that is rough on the impeller?

They do it when they summerize the boat.

I replaced it no problem. The old one wasn't bad but better safe than sorry. One thing I did have a questions about was should there be some sort of gasket between the two metal pieces that make up the pump?

The pumps, certainly from 1999 onwards, perhaps also earlier, use an O ring to seal the two halves of the pump; fitted to the backplate and difficult to spot if the engine and pump is painted black! A new O ring is usually included in the VP kit.

Usually comes with two , the o-ring with the green dot is for desiel applications (not sure what the dif is?) at least the last two I have bought for penta's.

I replace once a year, keep the last as a emergency replacement, like teh others say easy as pie, took maybe 10 minutes first attempt.

Quick question on this one--does your boat have to be out of the water to change the impellar?

Around here (the Chesapeake) they often suggest yearly impeller changes. I keep two spares on board just in case of failure. Generally you can change impellers while in the water, just close the seacock feeding that engine. Beyond carrying spare impellers I've also made sure to have the correct wrenches and sockets necessary to perform the task. I keep the tools in a plastic 'ammo box' along with some silica gel packets to help ward off moisture and rust. But they're cheapie Harbor Freight tools anyway so WHEN they rust I won't be out much to replace 'em.

If water leaks out from the impeller assembly when the engine is running, can you just try to tighten the bolts more or do I have to replace the seal?

Be very very careful about tightning the small screws. I broke on off on my port engine. It's not leaking but I will have to deal with it at the next impeller change. I would remove the pump and see if you can't get a replacement o-ring. Any generic one shoul;d work fine as it's not exposed to any organic solvents or strong acid which would require viton.

^^^!!! I was lucky enough to borrow a friends in/lb Snap Sn digital torque wrench for the install and let me tell you that the spec'd torque is next to nothing! 24in/lbs was the lowest setting on the wrench!

Where does one get the Torque Wrench you described?
