Post subject:  Volvo 5.7 Gsi rotor question

I ordered a new rotor, genuine Volvo part, and what showed up is not what i removed from under the distributer cap. It fits the same, and looks like it functions the same, but it just looks different. here is the comparison. The larger rotor is the original, the smaller is the replacement. Does anyone have any experience with this particular part?

I know at times Volvo and Merc both have used different ignitions systems, Thunderbird, etc so you might have received the part for a different distributor. Also, Volvo does superceed old part numbers.

I would suggest that you call Volvo Tech services and ask them. They have always been helpful to me. They can tell exactly the parts needed by your engine serial number.

One other tidbit, if you have a 2000 boat that doesn't mean you have a 2000 yr model engine. Builders purchase engines in bulk and use them throughout the year. When they change model years they don't send back all the engines for the "new" year model engines. My 2000 248 Vista had 1999 yr a 1999 Volvo 5.7GS in it. I assumed it was a 2000 VP, but when I called Volvo they said it was a 1999 model based on the serial number.

I bought my cap and rotor at the local Napa store. It was an exact match to my old one, at a much more reasonable cost, and it was in stock. Our dealer had to order a cap and rotor if we wanted it. The Napa stores have a cross reference in their catalog for Volvo and Mercruiser parts .

FYI: according to Volvo, the part that I received, although different from the original, is now the part you get when you order a new rotor. I think they just use a different supplier. And my engine is indeed a 2000 model.
