I'm getting tooled up to pull the SX Duo prop drive. The manual says replace the six lock nuts with new ones, but doesn't say (as far as I can see) what size they are. Can anyone help?
P.S. the boat is 3 hours away.

Off hand I couldn't tell you, but I believe its a pretty standard size. 1/2" IIRC.

my Cobra (same transom mount design) is 23 years old, I don't think the 6 nuts have ever been replaced, but I do always put OMC gasket sealer on the threads...never had a problem with them loosening....

I just checked the spare in my tool bag. You'll need a 5/8" wrench for them (1/2" studs). The easiest way I've found is to use a box end, and you can only take a few degrees of turn with each cut. My socket u-joint doesn't get in there very well. I see no reason to change them every time. Maybe every 3-4 times just to be safe, but even that should be overkill. Other than being stainless and shouldered, it's just a nylon insert nut.

They are actually not stainless; they are chrome plated brass or bronze. I use a 3/8" drive, 16mm socket with a flexible joint.The self locking function can be "renovated" by using a blunt chisel to slightly indeni the ring holding the plastic ring in place, but eventually they need changing; I change mine every 3 years. You do not want them to come loose, as that would relax the seal on the driveshaft bellows, not good !
