1999, 298 Vista with twin 5.0 Volvos. I am about to do my spring maintenance and part of that means changing the impellers. When I remove the hoses on the pump, am I in danger of water flowing into the bilge? |

Ive never done it myself, but I have read that it can be done. I believe the pump is above the waterline, but from memory it said to kink the hose and tuck it behind I belive the crank pulley, or maybe the belt. |

I did it last year. The pump on mine is below the water line. I got a joiner friend to turn me two wooden bungs tapering from 1" -3" over 12" to plug the hoses, they worked a treat , no more than a jug full water escaped. |

I'm sure you'll get different replies, but I never take the hoses loose from the impeller housing. Instead I leave the housing attached to the hoses, pull the housing up above the crankshaft. As long as the housing doesn't drop below the crankshaft you should be fine. If you want you can zip tie one of the hoses to a braket above. Be careful not to overtighten the four little screws that hold the housing together. I think the impeller housing is brass and it will strip out very easily. Can't remember if your last Four Winns had vp or not, if so everything else is the same. |

I had the same engine in my last boat as well, so its the same process. Like you, I have always just taken the housing off, rather than the hoses. It makes it easier...unless water starts flowing in, lol. |

When I've had to change a thermostat in the water, I've used a large wooden plug I got at WM to plug the raw water line coming into the boat (same level like the hose that comes from the transom to the pump on the Volvo) and it gives you a bit of extra security, I put in the plug in it and get the hose up above the water line..... |

This might be redneck and I never tried it. If it is a boat with out-drives; starting muffs, hose to pipe adapter and pipe cap. It could be used with the other methods mentioned as insurance. Dan |
