I just received, in the mail, an offer to extend my engine warranty through 2012 for $1320.

I'm thinking, over the course of the next 4-5 years the chances of experiencing a repair that exceeds that value is small; assuming PM is performed etc.

I'm not one for extended warranties, however I did purchase one a Corvette I owned and it paid for itself five times over, so this has me thinking.

Anyone care to weigh in on this?

I negotiated it into the price of the boat (the dealer paid all but $150 of it). I doubt you'd get any help from your dealer after the sale is closed, however.

On the one hand, I wouldn't have a new boat without it; on the other hand, I don't know if I could bring myself to pay that kind of money for it. The standard warranty is two years; if something's going to fail that's covered, it'll likely be inside that two year period. Beyond that it's unlikely to be a defect, etc.

Shop around, ask some dealers. It's free profit for them. You should be able to get it at a substantial discount. Same as the warranties Sears and Best Buy push.
