I have a 1986 fw 245 Vista. I have had to replace 2 engine couplers in the last 3 years. One they tell me was because of age, and the other was my fault for having the wrong pitch prop on the boat. My problem is ever since I have had the couplers replaced i have been getting water in my well while the boat is sitting. It didn't have this problem before the couplers were replaced. I have been told that possibly my transom is getting soft, but since this problem just occured after the engine coupler was replaced i am confused. My mechanic told me that he didn't bother the transom during the replacement annd that replacing the engine couplers would not cause the water leak. It has a 5.7 merc (350 chevy) with an alpha 1 outdrive. Please help if you can. |

What condition is your u-joint bellows in? Do you have the ability to pull your drive off and check the bellows? Vac the water out of the bilge and get in there with a flashlight and see where it is comming in at. Check the fasteners on the transom bracket. Are they loose? Dan |

If you can see at all where the drive shaft enter the boat from the transom do check there as suggested. It sure sounds like the drive shaft bellow to me also. |

If you are smoking couplers, your alignment is off. Check the alignment, which any tech worth his salt would do before replaceing a coupler. I'll bet your motor-mounts are sagging. Rot..........Water in the bilge, as long as bellows are O.K. means you will be needing a transom......... |
