No more carbed engines for Volvo Penta: Quote: With the formal launch of its 4.3Gi, 200-hp entry-level V-6 engine, Volvo Penta completed the transition to the New Generation, New Technology gasoline sterndrive lineup it started a year ago, the company announced.
“Our decision to exit the low-horsepower, carbureted engine market allowed our engineers to focus their energy on creating state-of-the-art propulsion packages designed to deliver great boating experiences, even at the entry level,” Volvo Penta of the Americas president and CEO Clint Moore said in a statement. All Volvo Penta sterndrive engines now feature multiport fuel injection, electronic throttle control and advanced engine monitoring systems. Early next year Volvo Penta will introduce a 230-hp catalyzed engine. Later in 2012 Volvo Penta will unveil an entirely new product that will “take gasoline sterndrive power to the next level,” the company said. |

The only way I'd buy a volvo over Merc is if it was ROCKET POWERED! OK, maybe a stretch, but wanted to steer this to a Merc v. Volvo thread anyway. hehehe. |

It still surprises me that carbs have lasted this long. I know it is a different market than cars, but autos have been EFI since around 1990. Before emissions requirements it probably made sense to have a cheaper lower power carb engine but since emissions development has big costs it makes sense to elimate complexity and costs of developing different calibrations. |

Well, in just a boat that I use to fart around the lake in... I'll take my 3.0 carb over a 4.3 fuel injected any day. Way better GPH |

Way better GPH If GPH is an issue, why have a petrol (gas) engine at all ? Why not a diesel e.g. the 1.7 litre Mercruiser turbodiesel or the Volvo D3, Both have more torque than the ancient 4 cylinder 3.0 litre petrol engine. My brother has a 1.8 litre engined Ford Mondeo diesel. He gets at least 50% more more MPG than than I do in my 3.0 litre petrol Mondeo. I know which one I prefer to drive ! Graham |

And with that change, I/Os will have lost whatever cost advantage they had over modern outboards, and you will see more OBs on small and mid size boats because of their inherent advantages.... |

If you're a normal boater that uses it once a month that has a shop fix everything? 2-stroke outboard all the way. I wouldn't even think about anything else. For someone like me or most of us that use our boats on a weekly (me almost daily) basis? The I/O has the advantage of reliability with use unlike an OB which shine in reliability in rare use. Don't use your VP I/O for 2 months? Might as well just take it to the shop before you even attempt to take it out on the water. A seal, hose, or something is going to be broken from sitting. |

My VP I/O sits for weeks and then months at a time. Starts on the first turn every time and has never failed in the slightest. |

Agree with Mike 100%. Having had I/O powered boats for 17 years, reliability has been good. Never an issue with seals or hoses going bad for me. I guess we must just be lucky. ![]() Salty boaters have to take a bit more care to keep the reliabilty there. As far as outboards go, if I had one, it would be a 4 stroke without question. |

I'm not saying that I/Os can't be reliable, I have one of the oldest boats here, it has the original engine, and drive, the drive has had some bearings and seals replaced, the manifolds have been replaced twice, starter, circ pump, etc. Normal I/O stuff. However, the work it takes every year, to keep it reliable, is considerable. I do it all myself, if I had to pay for it here in salt water land it would be considerable. My point is that I/Os were attractive because they cost less initially, and the repairs, while more frequent, were often cheaper. However, with I/Os costing as much as an outboard, that has better performance, is much easier to winterize, has no concern with fuel fumes in the bilge, and for me, most importantly, no issue with marine growth, there is now a clear advantage in going OB. I avoided them in the past, because the old smoky 2 strokes would not be well tolerated by family members, and when the DI 2 strokes and 4 strokes became popular, I was interested in them but put off by the high cost. Now that the I/O cost is close to equal, what's the advantage of I/O? Not much that I can see, if we are stuck with cat converters in the exhaust, and 700 dollar fuel pumps just like OBs.... |

If I was in salt, OB would be all I'd consider. I could have bought an OB powered boat but chose I/O, not for cost, but because we prefer that style of boat. We'd make the same choice again, most likely. |

My I/Os have been very reliable also. Don't Outboards above a certain size/ hp now also need to have catalytic converters as well ? So their complexity will also be increasing? If not, it doesn't seem very fair. A major problem with outboards is theft; hardly worth trying to secure them, as the thieves just use a chainsaw to take part of the transom with them ! Graham |

i/o looks 100x better that's for sure. I'm not happy with the new FW style of interior though. AT ALL. Let's take example a new H240. Nearly 7 FEET is wasted space of sun deck/swim deck. You pay the price of a 24ft boat, and really get the room of a 20ft with a sunpad, which gives you the room of a 18ft boat that doesn't have a sunpad setup. Retarded. You can get a 2011 Searay 175 Sport with the standard interior for around 35k and you get the nice 3.0 liter fuel injected mercruiser. Perfect lake boat for a family. Awesome GPH. To get the same interior room, let's go with the 2011 H220 (still less walking room). They're around 55k and the smallest engine you can get is the 5.7. Yuck. NOW, once you get out of the small boat market and get into a cruiser... I'd sell my soul to the devil for a 2011 V265. That's just on whole new level compared to anyone else. Sure, fully optioned to my taste might be 150k with the diesel so I can cruise to the bahamas and back..... but if i had 150k to burn, i'd own it today. |
