oil flush??

im considering using a motor flush to clean out the previous owners oil( i have no clue what he used). is this good for a older 88 3.0? and what should i use?

A quality automotive oil filter (K&N or Mobil 1), and Rotella T or Delo oil. The 3.0 needs the zinc for it's flat tappets that car oil doesn't contain anymore. Most marine oil filters do not have a high pressure bypass. Always use quality automotive filters in a boat. It's a feature marine filters do not include so you have to purchase a new engine if your oil filter is dirty.

Gotcha on the zinc issue but the boat came with a Napa 1092 oil filter on it. I'm having trouble cross referencing it to a k&n or mobile1 filter.

I use the K&N HP-3002 on my boat. Same engine. The 1092 NAPA unit is a remote cartridge filter. Was your engine fitted with a remote filter or does your still screw on the size next to the dizzy.

You just saved from a headache! Would it be useless to buy a cheap oil filter and 30w oil to do a quick flush on the hose?

I don't think that's going to do anything for such a short period of time. I'd use the boat for a weekend on fresh filter/oil then change it again.

Honestly, the engine isn't what you have to worry about. It's the oil in the outdrive that you want to flush.

Motor flushes I would NOT use, here's why, if there is some sludge in that engine, and the flush loosens it and it winds up getting sucked into the oil pick up, guess what happens to your oil pressure? Yep goes down could go to zero if it's enough sludge. Just change the oil, use it the rest of the season, and change it again when you winterize it.

I agree with Lou, never put anything but oil in the crankcase. Unless the previous owner put something other than oil in there a complete oil/filter change will be fine. You might have a fraction of a quart of previous oil left but as long as it is oil I wouldn't worry about any left over affecting the new oil.
