Post subject:  Steering Ram Lubrication

I used to always grease the steering ram of our Vista, but totally forgot on the Sundowner. Glad I remembered because it was dry as a bone and I had realized recently that moving the steering wheel with the engine off was extremely difficult. After greasing it, its back to being very easy to move without the engine running and that much smoother when it is running. I use Quiksilvers 2-4-C grease.

Wondering what people use, and how often you grease your steering ram?

I was told that the steering arm on my h220SS was sealed and lubricated internally and that trying to grease the arm was not a good idea. Now I am worried I have been given some bad advice. Calling FW on Monday thanks for your post.

I've done mine every year, I grease the grease zerk on the actuator and grease the piston rod with OMC triple guard grease. Steering is very smooth, like the no-feel power steering on old school Chryslers....

Just make sure you grease up the ram, you don't want it corroding in the salt air...I don't know if the actuators on the modern Volvos have a grease fitting, but my old OMC Cobra does. Use the OMC/Bombardier triple guard grease (get it at Evinrude dealers) best water proof grease ever, stands up to salt water and anything else....
