I can't imagine that it would be that difficult to get that out of there, you'd have to remove the risers on both sides (unless you know for sure which side it was on) and remove the drive because it could be in the ex passage that goes into the drive.
I never understood why Volvo eliminated them, the ones on my 24 year old Cobra are still fine (I checked them when I did the manifolds in June). I don't like the idea of water being able to rush up the exhaust if you have to slow down suddenly. They can fail if you have a bad overheat, but this boat has been in salt water for over 10 years and they are fine......
