Winterized my 1998 5.7 GSI this weekend and dropped the boat off at storage. However, last night while lying there second guessing myself, that I did not forget anything.... I did not drain the hose hooked to the exhaust manifold on the drivers side above the water pump. I drained the block on both sides and removed the hose on the passengers side manifold to drain. But forgot to do the drivers side. After removing the block drain (on drivers side) I removed both hoses on the water pump and forgot to do the exhaust manifold. I unhooked all hoses at the thermostat because once everything is drained I like to pour a couple cups of Pink antifreeze down all hoses for piece of mind. Yes, I also remembered to drain the oil cooler. Question.... I need someone that knows an engine just a little better - will draining through the block drain remove all water from the 1/2 of the engine block, or do I need to go remove the front manifold hose and drain it? My storage is only 45 minutes away and I may go do it for piece of mind. Just curious if it will be a waisted trip and all the water will already be drained. Thanks, Jeff |

Yes, you need to!! BUT, I would winterize using antifreeze. Why, you say. Because, now there is air in the block which will induce rust. Or at lest more air than draining the block. Myself, I would go with a closed system. |

Jeff-- I see in your thread you mentioned having an oil cooler that you remembered to drain. I'm wondering if I have that on my engine.....the manual says if equipped, then drain it...but I;'m not sure if I have an oil cooler...what/where do I look?? It's a '96 238 Vista w/ 5.7 Volvo GL duo prop....any insight would be appreciated...Thanks! Winterizing already????!!!!! |

Follow up - would not of been able to sleep all winter. I drove out to the storage unit and drained the manifold hose, which drained any remaining water & pink I had added on that side. I feel better and should be able to sleep through the winter. The power steering oil cooler is located at the rear of the engine just behind the spark arrestor on top of the engine (on my 5.7 GSI). I am guessing you have one if you have power steering. The manual says to unhook the water hoses, loosen the mounting bolts, tilt and drain. Mine is a 2 1/2" diameter cylinder about 6 inches long. I unhook the hoses and hit both ends with compressed air back and forth untill no more water comes out. Saves me from loosening the mounts and having to tilt. If you do not drain, you may be replacing in the spring. Not a lot of water in there (I would guess no more than 1 cup or less), I just do not know if there is enough room to allow it to expand without splitting the light gage metal housing. Jeff |

Having a closed system has drawbacks too. Nothing wrong with raw water cooled if u winterize correctly. I wouldn't want closed system unless I was in salltwat. Draining is fine and full proof. Air will not freeze and you will always have air in system so that's not an issue. I drained my 96 5.7 yearly for 15 years and block and manis were clean. Ring failed but I would too after 15 years of water sport towing. Besides you still need to drain entire system even if your going to add anti freeze. Some will hook up a antifreeze kit to the low unit and run engine til anti freeze poor out thinking they did something...not |
