2001 volvo 135, run only in freshwater, starts right up runs fine till warmup, towing the kids on tubes and sudden power loss followed by tendency to stall completely. temperature seems normal as far as the guage goes, impellor is fairly new. i've never had exhaust manifold off and i'm sure plug wires points etc are due. boat is carburated and plugs are new( only 4 tanks this summer)

any ideas?? thanks guys for any and all help!!! cheers graham

okay i just ran the boat again, checked the prop and leg its clean, started right up, let it idle for a couple minutes then while still cold i ran it at 1/2 throttle ran fine. went up to 3/4 to full throttle and within 30 seconds major power loss followed by stalling. temperature on the guage was maybe 140 degrees, not even fully warmed up yet. maybe i should pull the impeller and check?? it's obvious the boat is telling me something, any ideas fellas??
thanks graham

I would look into fuel delivery. If you keep it at half throttle or less does it keep running and not stall? Does it re-start easily after it stalls or do you have to wait before it will re-start?

it restarts quite easily after stalling. i ran slow ahead across the lake to the boat launch(7=8 min) and no problem. put it on the trailer and checked impeller and its 100%. Idled fine in the driveway, water cooling out prop and leg etc. maybe fuel pump?? the fuel filter is 4 tanks new and fuel came from reliable gas station?? cheers graham

Slap a fuel press gage on it. If it's FI, you should expect about 40-50 psi (check your manual to be sure). Check at idle, and while running loaded. If it drops as you suggest, at about 1/2 throttle (while running on the water), try removing your gas cap, and see if it does the same (possible fuel tank vent issue). After that, change the filter first, fuel pump/press regulator second.

I'm not a VP person, but that should be enough info to get started and someone else will probably chime in with the specifics for your engine.

A 2001 3.0 should be a carb engine....

Runs fine till warm up...sounds like the choke may not be opening all the way, and then the fuel mix is to rich for the warm engine. Take off the flame arrestor on the carb, and look, does the flap at the top of the carb (choke plate) close when it's cold, then gradually open when the engine warms up?
Your running temp is a little on the low side, most Volvos come with a 160* thermostat so running temp should be 165-170 with an accurate gauge.
If the choke does not open, it the choke shaft may be dirty with deposits on it, you can clean that with choke cleaner. The other cause may be a defective thermostatic spring or electric choke heater. I've never worked on one so I don't know what method they use to open the choke as the engine warms up.....

If the choke is working as described, and you still have the problem, it could be that the fuel mixture is set too lean and the enrichment provided by the choke being on, masks this issue till the engine warms and the choke opens. Then the carb may need to be cleaned, rebuilt and adjusted (idle mixture and idle speed)....

+1 on the carb choke. I assumed FI. My BIL had the same issue with his '92 Crown, but was always hard to restart. You could tell on initial start as would smoke for a while, and ran very rich. It did run OK at WOT, but was very difficult to re-start warm.

I have a 2000 3.0.. same engine.

It's the choke or fuel pump or fuel filter or clogged main jet in carb

:D okay so i finally figured out there's a secondary fuel filter where the fuel line enters the holly carb. 4.19 cents and 10 minutes to change. i had changed the main fuel filter but completely missed the secondary. anyway the boat runs fine again, can't believe i missed a month of summer boating for something so simple!!

thanks to everyone for their help and ideas!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cheers graham
