Ok so I can't read the serial" on my outdrive and I need to replace the piece of junk trim sender . It is for a 2000 Gi 5.0L drive is a duo prop Anyone have a good guess. I really want to order the part and put it on while the boat is in storage. Also anyone replace this thing. how difficult is it to fish through the transome where it runs |

I've replaced it, not to bad as long as you can lie on the engine and reach the back for the wiring connector. |

The wires for the sender come into the transom mount near the raw water intake hose. It can be tough to get to that spot. If there is a way, I'd try to use the old sender wiring to pull the new sender wiring into the transom, the wiring has a plug, that has to plug into the hole in the transom mount. There is also a clip, that is supposed to hold that plug in place from the inside. BTW, I found the OE OMC ones lasted about 1 1/2 seasons in salt, my aftermarket Sierra one has actually lasted longer. My mechanic did a modification to make the replacement easier. He drilled a hole on the side of the transom mount, and I can run the wire up the transom of the boat like a transducer wire. The original plug and wiring I left in place, sealed up with 3M 4200. |

Your sender is probably a 2 wire type; current part number 3863129 according to a the Doug Russell on-line parts catalogue ( the 3 wire type costs 50% more !) I found changing them a pain; did it once the proper way (lost the little clip holding the transom plug in place etc, never to be seen again). Since then, I cut the wires outside the boat and crimp them to the new wires using glue lined heatshrink waterproof crimps, over which I put a sleeve of adhesive lined heatshrink tubing (with a ring of PU sealant at each end before I shrink the tube) The joints have never failed, the trim senders still need changing every 2 seasons though !
