If you don't have any cooling problems, I would replace it with a freeze plug. I wonder if that was his way of making sure that if the block were to freeze, the ice would have any easy escape to prevent cracking? |

Sometimes, depending on the boat and motor its hard to get a freeze plug back into the block with everything together, I have seen the rubber plugs used before but I would prefer the brass plug be put back in if it was mine. |

After experiencing the effects of a core plug coming out of a car engine at speed ( spectacular and expensive !) I'd personally want to have a proper one in there. Maybe not so much an issue with open cooling ( v little coolant pressure) but with closed cooling/ pressurised coolant a must. Graham |

Maybe it was used to drain the block? I'd also tend to want a real metal one in there. However, one good thing with a boat with open cooling system. If it did come out and you found out before it any engine overheat, no need to worry about filling the cooling system! Just put it back in and you're on your way. |
