Hi guys
Sorry in advance if this is a stoopid question, but I need to get an alternator for my FW Horizon 230. It's a 2005 model and engine is the Mercruiser V8 320hp (6.2 litre I think). You know .. the big thirsty one :D

I'm actually in Australia and have been quoted $500 for a new alternator plus $100 for the belt! Attempt daylight robbery that, surely!

If anyone knows the part number, or where I can get hold of one (and the belt) that'd be great. Even with postage gotta be cheaper than buying locally!

Belt? any auto parts store. Bring the old one to match it up.

Alternator? You must have rebuilding shops in Australia. It's just a general motors alternator with a few metal screens attached, anyone can fix the insides.

You can try Marine Parts Express http://www.marinepartsexpress.com/ in the US. I have bought plenty of stuff from them - service is great, prices are good, and delivery is excellent.

Locally, pull the regulator out of the back of the alternator as it may just be that if it's not charging. Go to either Repco or an Autoelec. Regarding the belt, either Marine Parts Express or your local auto shop. Nothing fancy about the belt - just get the right length. Usually the belt has some numbers on it like 12-905 etc. this also helps in getting an exact local replacement.

I just blew a belt this weekend, the volvo online parts book tells you the length. Just run to the auto parts store with how long you need.

Hey Guppy, I am in Sydney too. There are plenty of electricians that can recondition them. I can look around for you if you like.
Where are you in Sydney? Give me the details of the motor and alternator and I will go fish'n

Steve

Thanks for the replies guys! All good ideas.. and recogn taking it to an electrician is the way forward.
I'm on Northern Beaches (Fairlight), Steve. If you're able to find someone to do it.. that'd be spot on. Thanks a lot :D
