Splashed the boat today, but I am getting a whine from the engine compartment. Happens when the key is in first position. Seems like the preload fuel pump? Then it goes off. Once the boat is started, (key in 2nd position), the whine comes back. It does not change pitch with throttle changes...so this makes me think it is one of the fuel pumps. anyone else heard this?

fuel pump hum usually means it's straining... aka.. fuel filter is clogged

By no means was it straining...the accelleration and running of the boat were great. I would agree if the performance was down.

Fuel injected engine, you should hear pump whine all the time while engine is running… The sound of whine should be same as preload time… Typically this noise is blend with engine sound when engine is running but you can tell the pump is running... It is not annoying sounds and almost unnoticeable for our boat. If the noise of your pump fluctuate, high pitch or not constant then you have some issue.

That is exactly what it is...but the sound is annoying. My wife brought it up and I agreed, (which I would have anyway)...but is was a whine that eventually gets to you in an irritating way. The sound does not change with the throttle load on the engine though.

Just an outside-of-the-box thought.....

Do you have a fresh water shower on your boat? If so, could it be the water pump that is running?

If it's THAT loud, please change your fuel filter :)

I heard a high pitched whine that did not change frequency. FW dealer said it was the fuel pump, normal, nothing to worry about.

Shop is going to test both fuel pumps and change the water/fuel seperator.

I do have a shower but the pump was off.

I can always hear mine running and its an '07... I think this could be normal although I have not heard the sound that yours makes... it adds an electric motor sounding component on top of your engine noise...

If this is a new sound to you, then it is the fuel pump going bad due to that government mandated ethanol crap you are putting in your boat. Maybe you can send the $300 bill to ol' Al.

Quit spreading propaganda. E10 does not hurt fuel pumps.

I stand corrected. It is the ethanol gas that has that additional 5% that will cause all the problems.

The only time I have ever been annoyed by the fuel pump noise was when I drained my fuel tank and ran the motor until it ran out of fuel. I filled the gas tank with 25 gallons of non ethanol fuel, replaced the impeller and just screwed it in didn't prefill, Loud nasty noise coming from the fuel pump after that, filled the impeller with fuel and bled the fuel system of air through the two schrader valves on the engine, one near the intake and one on the fuel pump itself and the crazy sound went away. The fuel pump always has a small amount of noise but it was nothing compared to what was going on before. Good luck with your fix.

I have heard pumps that start to go bad and will hum loudly, some last like that for years some go instantly. Also, some pumps are louder than others. Air leaks in your fuel line can also cause the pump to run louder than normal.
