I just hit a stump, and bent the prop shaft (SX-M1 drive). How hard is it to replace the shaft? I have a Sealoc book, and it looks like the main problem is getting a tool to pull the bearing housing. Does the prop shaft come out freely after that?

Thanks,

Richard

How much is a lower end?? In the long run, it could be cheaper & better.

In other words, for a few $$ more replace the lower end rather than the shaft. Ask your self, who old is the drive, is there other damage, how much more will it cost??? Labor cost, I think it would be cheaper too. Unbolt the old lower end and bolt the new one on!

If it was a collision, your insurance should take care the repair work ….. It might be worth to look into it..

If you have insurance I'd use it for a legit claim, that propshaft alone is about 600 bucks plus installation. Still cheaper than a Volvo lower which can run as high as 4000 depending on if you get used or not.

Thanks for all the advice. I am going to submit a claim to insurance. The estimate from the repair shop was $850 (minimum) parts, $360-450 labor.

Good luck with it all! Just price every thing out first. At "$850 (minimum)" you could come in a little higher!

Add the cost of the correct VP service manual.

Here is a link to prices: http://www.marinepartsexpress.com/vp_outdrives.htm

Rebuilt, the whole drive. $3,500. New $6,700. The lower end should cost less.

Thanks for all the advice. Insurance will cover it, so I took it to the local boat shop.
