Post subject:  Flush water dumping out at bottom of Gimbal housing?

Hi Fellas,

I just finished putting the motor back together from doing the manis, risers, circ pump, impeller and thermostat replacement. I put the muffs on and fired the motor up for the first time since I bought the boat. Started right up. But I noticed a lot of water coming out at the bottom of the gimbal housing. I'm not sure if it's normal there is also water coming from the prop outlet. Just curious your thoughts here.

when you are asking about the gimbal housing you mean the base of the outdrive where it bolts to the transom correct? If so then no there is not supposed to be water coming out of there. You may have a hose not hooked up.

Actually, while I'm not a drive expert, I think water just comes out all over the place on some DP models. I'm pretty sure mine does that too.

Water should come out at the transom shield as well as the prop on an SX as they are thru hub exhaust (providing they exhaust bellows is installed, Regal did not installl one on my friends 190 bowrider).

What you don't want is water getting into the drive shaft bellows. That will ruin you gimbal quickly and you just might see some water coming from the gimbal inside the engine space.

No water comes out of the hub on my SX. The hose looks attached and flexes with drive. It that a problem? I thought maybe at idle there's not enough flow/pressure to send water to the hub as it all came out the exhaust bellows vent openings??

Ok thanks all. It appears to be normal but I wanted to check b/c the volvo factory manual suggests replacing bellows and clamps every second year. I'm not sure if that's been done on mine so it had me thinking. It also says to lube the gimbal housing and uv joints every season. Probably something I'll go ahead and do in a few weeks.
