OK, changing out the shifter cable, it's toast from last year. So I'm pulling then it stops! So I pull harder, nothing now I get into tug-of-war mode, brace my foot and yep it all came out. There is a plastic sleece inside the foam hose. It had melted over the years and the end of the cable could not go through. So now I have to replace the whole assembly. I can't find anything in my manuals but did find this in Seloc (don't yell, I used this until I got my hands on manuals).

1.Using a crows-foot adapter on your wrench, unscrew the sleeve connector at the transom plate, pull away the sleeve and throw away the O-ring.
2.Coat a new O-ring with Gasket Sealing compound and then slide it onto the connector until it sits against the inner side of the hex head.
3.Coat the connector threads lightly with sealing compound, thread it into the plate and tighten it to 46-52 ft. lbs. (62-71 Nm) on 1994-97 models or 40-45 ft. lbs. (54-61 Nm) on 1998 and later models.

Has anyone ever had to replace one? How difficult is it? I haven't tried making myself small yet and worming my arm to find the end. What am I looking at for the "fun"??? Someone might notice I have a 1996 but the engine is a 1995. That's the way it came new. Must have been an early made boat with a leftover engine. The engine is baged as a Volvo but the engine plate says OMC. THat figures for me. I always manage to buy bastards. Bought a new car once and was only made for 2 years, had a truck that you could not put any other years parts on it. Only that year. Oh and my first car was a 1971 Pinto.

How hard it is depends on if you can actually get to it or not without pulling the motor, with nothing in the way its an easy job.

Having a boat of one year and an engine from another year is not uncommon, if they were building a 96 boat and had 95 engines left over they would have used them, for all intensive purposes your engine is no different than a 96 except for the OMC tag.

Ok removed the starboard side exhaust to get in the back easier but arm not long enough. I got my finger inside the transom area but with everything else on the transom I don't see how this is possible without removing the engine.

My question for anyone with actual knowledge of this housing and has seen it, what purpose does the inner plastic hose/sleeve serve. By the difficulty of trying to remove the cable and pulling the inner hose out I would assume that this was fixed in some way, maybe by compression fitting, to the threaded hex fitting. The exterior is a heat resistant pressure hose and by way of feeling it appears to be intact. What would the possibility be of just placing the cable into the exterior housing and let it be? Other than doing this and trotting down to the lake, about 1 hour 15 minutes down the road, to check if it leaks does someone have any ideas for testing for leakage. I thought of just putting a garden hose around it and see what happens. My other thought is to buy 2 of these housings and dissect one to see the reason for the inner hose. I found these for about $25 each. I'd be willing to sacrifice $25 if it would save me from having to remove the engine.

I would guess it is just a guide for the cable to go through making it easier to install the cable and as long as you keep the hose vertical any water that gets in will run back through the hose :?:
