Pulled out my 1998 220 Horizon 5.7Gsi last week to get ready for the season. Boat fired right up and ran great on the muffs. However, no trimming... Hit the breaker resets 50amp and 10amp - still nothing. Reviewed some post on the forum - hoped Rick's advice would work, wrapped on the motor with wrench - still nothing. Pull out my maual's wiring diagram and volt meter and started checking. Good power at battery, power at 50amp breaker both sides, power at pump motor coming in, power at pump motor going to switches. All the while having my 9 year old daughter keep trying the switch and I kept hitting the 50amp and 10amp breaker - just hoping it would all of a sudder start working... it didn't. Although, while doing that I started checking power on the up and down wires from the pump motor - nothing. Then I started working my way backwards to determine where I started losing power. Now the frustrating part - now no power on either side of pump motor (which had power 10 minutes ago). Checking battery leads and everything else I kept going backwards. Finally - got back to the working 50amp - now no power on the output side. What the??? Grabbed a wrench jumped the terminals had my daughter hit the switch and up and down it went!!! Somehow the 50amp was shorting out - saying it worked sometimes and not worked sometimes.

Just wanted to share my headaches to help someone in the future. By the way - I may need to sign up for yoga to do future work - eight times climing in along the engine on my back working/checking that pump motor. I was afraid I wasn't going to be able to get out... Nothing like hearing the neighbors walking by "Are you ok?" because all they could see were my feet sticking straight out of the engine bay.

I had the same thing last spring to my '98 200 Horizon with a 5.7gs. I would read power on both sides of the breaker until I tried to draw current through it, then nothing. I tried the same thing to check it, jumpered over it and bingo! It took me 2+ hours to find that one.

If you need new breakers you can order through a Volvo Penta dealer to the tune of about $114 (three part numbers later), or order the same thing from here for less than half the price.

If you are concerned about "marine" or "fitment" take a look at the part numbers - they are the same as stock:

Nothing to do with trim pumps, but I wish I had a supple yoga trained body; just spent 7 + hours today trying to adjust the engine alignment on my 2004 boat before refitting the outdrive. It's the first time it's needed adjustment; checked every year so far. My wife offered to help, I told her it'd be in about 15 minutes time once I'd loosened off the locknuts. Seized locknuts on the mountings. No lubrication from new. 30 minutes + each to remove. Totallly seized adjustment nuts. Impossible to move them at all so I had to remove the engine mountings and put them in a vice. Impossible to remove one engine bolt port side the block without disconnecting the remote oil filter. Then the nuts and bolts holding the mounts to the stringers were totally seized (why the f*ck did FW use stainless nuts, washers, spring washers and mild steel bolts with no lubrication; like they did with the swim platform !

Ric, this is why water, even freshwater which is all I get in mine, should never be in the engine compartment/ bilge !!!!

One engine mount off, one bolt off the othe one.

At least the weather has been decidedly boating unfriendly, promised to be the same for the rest of May ( and we're off to Florida on the 11th !)

Thanks for the link Sanmiam. I could not believe the price when I looked last night on-line. Are these made of gold? Not quite as good as your price, I was able to find a Volvo OEM one on e-bay for $70 with shipping.

I also spent about 2+ hours trying to figure out the problem... Just about ready to say heck with it and haul it in to the marina, but probably wouldn't of gotten it back for a couple of weeks. I already waited all winter and did not want to wait anymore. New breaker should be here by Friday.

I feel you pain, took me about 4 because of the same symptoms. What compounded it was when I unplugged and plugged back in the trim sending wires (from the pump to.the helm) the thing started working so I stupidly assumed a bad connection in the plug was the issue.

On mine it ended up being that one of the terminals on the breaker physically came loose (probably when I moved the box to replace the risers/manifolds).

First boat and already its a PITA

I was shocked also when I saw the price of the OEM part and went looking elsewhere. I can't remember where I found it but I know it only cost me about $40.

When mine went out I had just finished de-winterizing it and the drive was all the way down (I keep my trailer parked on railroad ties for several reasons, running it with the muffs on and the drive all the way down is one of them). So there I was with the boat essentially stuck in the yard. I couldn't pull it anywhere with the drive down so I started looking for a way to raise it. I grabbed a set of jumper cables and jumped from the battery to the pump and off it went. Now I knew the pump worked so it was a simple matter of finding the weak link, took only a few minutes to find it then.

re engine alignment and needing to be a contortionist/ yoga expert...............the last engine mounting to aluminium bracket/ stringer bolt took 90 minutes to remove; I had to use a 18" breaker bar and 3/4" socket and hit the end with a 3lb sledgehammer to move it every single degree !
