Post subject:  VP SX-A Exhaust Bellows Question

Hello all. I am pretty new to boat maintenance. I have a 2008 H180 with the VP 3.0 and SX-A drive. I changed the impleller today which was pretty easy. I fired her up on the trailer and for the first time went off the boat and looked closely at the outdrive while the engine was idling. I noticed water coming out of the exhaust bellows thru holes at the bottom near the front and rear of the bellows. Is this normal? I assume it is since there appears to be two streams of water at the bottom front and 2 streams at the bottom rear of the exhaust bellows only while the engine is running. I just want to set my mind at ease. Thanks.

i had the same question last year--I asked my mechanic and he said that it is normal to have that seepage through the bellows-- as long as it's the EXHAUST bellows and not the drive/u-joint bellows!!

That's what I figured... thanks. I knew it had to be designed that way since it is too symmetric to be justa few random leaks. I also recently found elsewhere someone saying the SX-A exhaust bellows comes with holes so it can drain when out of the water.

yep, i have a H180 too. A 2006 with VP outdrive and mine does that too. It doesn't seem right but that's the design I suppose.

Great post!! I saw the same on my outdrive and thought I had to do the bellows and was actually going to take it in this week. It's too perfect for it to be damaged I thought. Thanks for the post again took one more worry out of my mind.

The only purpose of the exhaust bellows is to route the exhaust down and out the drive instead of coming up right at the transom, pulling the exhaust bellows right off would not let the boat sink.

.......................but it will make it loud !!!!!!! Mine ( SX, not SXA) had the stub type exhaust tube, not connected to the outdrive. The reverberation from the swim platform was awful. I put on the other type, it's a lot more quiet and pleasant now, no slower ( maybe I'm geting old, boy racer loud exhausts are not my thing anymore !)
