I have a 99 horizon 180 with a volvo 3.0. The starter keeps shearing starter bolts one at a time. I have no clue why and I have went to grade 8 bolts even that didn't help. Any advice or ideas would be great

You may need to find out if the starter needs to be shimmed. Is it the correct starter?

Not sure got the boat in february for a good price couldn't pass it up previous owner thought the engine had a spun bearing when all it was was the starter bolt sheared I have had it out several times but seems like every other time I'm shearing a bolt. I don't think its the oem starter as there are no braces as an exploded oem view shows

From 99 up the starter that needs to be used should have a tail bracket on it that goes up to the block from the starter, otherwise you will keep having the same issue.

Thanks for the advice I spoke with several local mechanics and they all had the same first impression that I had the wrong starter in place. I removed the starter which didn't have any support brackets and did some research come to find out I did have the wrong starter. Oem calls for an eleven tooth starter for a 14 inch flywheel I had a nine tooth on my boat going to install and try it this evening. Hope this resolves my problem
