Post subject: | Which OMC drive do I have |
I just purchased a 95 190 Horizon open bow and is has an OMC drive, not by my choice, but the boat is extremely clean so I bought it any way. It has a fuel injected 5.0 in it. Is this one of the drives that was built with Volvo parts or not and how can I tell. I have read that the later OMC cobras were simular to the Volvo SX drive. It does not say SX on the side of it only OMC Cobra. I am tring to find out if this is a good drive or not. Thanks in advace for any help. |

I'm fairly certain that you have the newer drive that is the same as the volvo sx drive. I think the switch was around 92 or 93 to the new version. I'm sure one of the guru's will confirm for sure. |

93 onward should be the SX (looked into a 93 before I purchased the 98) All the same, I would take a look at the top pf the drive. If there is a hump ontop is an SX ![]() If it is flat its an pure OMC Paint color is of no interest |

I am not sure if it has a hump or not, I am picking up the boat on wed or thursday if it isnt raining. Thanks, I will look for the hump. Is there a chance that it could still be one of the old OMC drives? From the research I did, after I bought the boat, said OMC and Volvo got together in 94. Did they still install the old OMC drives on new boats even after 94? |

I'd be surprised to see the original all OMC Cobra on a '95 boat, but you never know I guess. So look at it before you close the deal if you can. BTW, I have one of the originals and it's not bad, it's lasted all these years with normal maintenance but the parts are getting harder to find, and good techs who know how to work on them are too. You'd be better off by far with the Volvo style drive. |

I have the same boat - engine - drive combination. My outdrive has the "OMC Cobra SX" decals on the sides of the trim cylinders but it is the same as the Volvo Penta SX drive. Volvo was in the process of buying OMC at that time. I am the original owner and I have approximately 2000 (two thousand) hours on the boat. It runs like a charm. The boat is trailered and stored inside. I pull the outdrive every year during winterizing and grease the u-joints and gimbal bearing. I've never had any problem internally with the engine or outdrive. I did have the rubber drive bellows leak at about 10 or 12 years of age due to rubbing against the hose clamp worm screw. Luckily I found it before any damage occurred. I also had the exhaust flapper valves in the "Y" pipe wear, come loose, and cause a partial exhaust blockage. This caused a significant loss of power. Both were rather simple and economical fixes, but the flapper valve took a while to find. Overall, I would highly recommend the Volvo system. Hope this helps. |

Surface Interval thanks for the info and giving me a little more confidence in my engine and drive combo. What prop are you running? I do have the volvo version of drives, the one with the hump on the top. I put the boat in the water this evening an it runs excellent, with the exception of a little bit of just off idle surge. I can live with it. Thanks for all the info from everyone. |

I have the original OMC 14 1/4 x 21 aluminum and also a Stiletto stainless from Overtons in the same size. There is no performance difference between the two. Other brands may differ. Most people recommend propping for the top end of the rpm range. The range for this engine is 4200 to 4600 rpm. |
