I have a 2005 5.7 gi with only 78 hrs and i am losing oil 4 hr run it will be down half a liter and i am getting a small oil slick behind the boat how do i find where the oil is coming from ???? is changing the valve seals a big job ???

I would have thought its not valve stem seals. With only 78 hours on it any sort of wear issues would be unlikely, I'd be looking at something like a stuck PCV valve which allows oil to be sucked out of the rocker cover and into the carb/intake as the first choice.

Hours on a boat mean nothing. A babied boat with 500 hours that was never revved over 3500 and oil changed every 3 months will be in MUCH MUCH MUCH better condition then a boat with 75 hours run at WOT the whole time.

Cheap and easy to fix if you've taken apart and worked on old cars.

I would agree. Look for, rocker cover loose, bad remote oil hose. something like that.

thank you for you help i will have it checked out........ if oil was going into the carb what are the side effects ????? would i get my oil slick????

Also look at your hydraulic oil for the tilt n trim, that can leave an oil slick behind the boat too.
Run the engine on the water hose, while someone watches when you start it. If it sat overnight, and you saw a big puff of bluish smoke at starting, that would point to valve seals. You can also look at the spark plugs if one is black that's the one that's burning oil and the one with the possible bad seal.

If you have a Gi you are fuel injected and therefore no carb.

In addition to checking the plugs I would also check the outdrive to make sure you do not have two separate issues (oil consumption and oil slick)

Just out of curiosity - was this the first run post winterization??? Is there any oil in the bilge?

Looks like you are bringing it to a shop - probably not a bad idea in this particular situation. They should be able to diagnose it much quicker with the boat in hand then we could with the description provided.

If you would prefer to go down the DIY path you would need to provide some additional info such as any further locations of oil on/around the engine. Milky colored oil on dipstick? Exhaust hue (blue-ish or not)? Oil pressure while running (is it high or low)? Pull the PCV hose - any oil in there? Pull the filter and check inside the intake for oil - anything? Pull plugs as mentioned earlier and relay what you find.

*edit* - also, if/when you pull the PCV, shake it back and forth. Do you hear rattling? (you should)

If you have answers to these it should give a little more insight into what is going on.

The oil level was down at the end of last year didnt think much of it..... had it changed. Been out 3 times so far and had the oil slick when sitting at the dock after the run and no slick befor the run????...... been told its just breaking in period ????? my power stearing fluid was a bit milky pulled off the cooler pressure tested it no leak
no oil in the bilge... no water in the oil... pressure is good
