I just got my invoice for my spring oil change and see they only put 6 quarts of oil into my 2001 7.4L Volvo GSi. I've seen spec sheets that say 9 quarts and I've seen 6 quarts. No I haven't been to my boat to check the dipstick. I have run it a few times since without any issues. Anyone have the latest and greatest information from Volvo?

I've syphoned, drained, and anything else I can think of every oil change.... I get no where near the recommended amount of oil out.... like 3 qts (4.5 by manuf), then the small oil filter (<1/2 qt). I put in about the same, and all is well on the dipstick everytime I check.... always between full and -1qt; I also always check it in the same spot for consistency (on the trailer in the drive way).

Maybe it was a typo, or something inocent. Maybe that's all that came out, and thus went back in. My opinion is to check the dipstick!... then check the oil

I've also seen places where it calls for 9 quarts. I believe that one if the "pan" calls for 8, another quart in suspension and in the filter? Guess my dipstick will tell me the most, but will it?

At the end of the day the only thing that really matters is that the oil is at the correct level in the oil pan which is what the dipstick tells you. Too much and your crank is in the oil whipping it around and that causes problems with aerated oil. A small amount under doesn't really hurt as long as there is enough to keep the inlet pipe under the oil once the engine is running (extra up to proper level helps keep the oil cooler since there is more volume to disipate the heat.)

Since all the different manuals give different info sounds like oil pan design might have changed? Also, most auto manuals now specify amount of oil with and without changing the filter to keep the confusion to a minimum.

Over the years I have found that these refill specs are at best approximate measures. My 88 4.3 is supposed to take 4.5 qts but the most I ever get out of it is 3.5 or a bit more. I fill it till it's full on the dipstick. And because of how the dipstick is configured on many inboard boats, checking the oil is tricky in itself. Unlike an auto engine, the dipstick goes in the tube, but not into the pan. So the oil level in the tube is what it's reading. And that can vary a lot. When I get to the boat, on the mooring, when I first check it, the level will be high, but after pulling out the stick, and re-inserting it you will get a more accurate reading. The reason this happens, is that after you run the engine, the air above the oil in the tube is hot, when it cools off it contracts and pulls up some of the oil with it. Then when you run it, the air in tube is hot, it expands and pushes down the oil level in the tube. But same as with a cold engine, if you remove and re-insert it a few times, you get a more accurate reading. You don't have this in auto engines because the dipstick is right in the pan, not in a tube with a column of oil and air on top of it.
