Post subject: | Impeller question |
Hi I recently bought a Sierra impeller for my 2004 H180 4.3 GL-D. I've always bought the Volvo-Penta impellers before, but this Sierra one came with a little rubber disc that seems to fit nicely on one end of the impeller. This didn't come with the Volvo-Penta. What's it for? I'm guessing that this impeller fits many applications, and some of those need it, whereas mine doesn't. ![]() ![]() Thanks, Rick |

Interesting....I am wondering if the disc is simply a piece of flashing that made it through the molding and packaging process. |

My original VP impellor had one,! I really don't know if they do anything, I change the impellor every 2 years, some kits come with the disc, some don't ; so I fit them one year and not the next. Nothing like a bit of variety. |

My VP impeller came with one as well, but there was not one on the impeller I replaced. After spending a couple of minutes trying to figure out the engineering involved in necessitating it and any disadvantages I said "screw it" and shoved it on there. No problems yet. |

yeah, me too. replaced my volvo impellor last month with a Sierra--same thing...Sierra didn't have one, so the guy at the parts counter just pulled out the old one and placed it on the new one--said it's just kind of acts like a bushing against the impellor cover. He said it was ok if it wasn't there, but he put it on anyway....at leats it'll keep some water away from the shaft....... |

Yeah, I called Sierra directly and spoke to one of the Techs. He said it was just a bushing that goes over the impeller shaft next to the housing cover. Why you'd need to do this, I don't know. I left it off, since it wasn't too tight a fit. It probably would never happen and I don't see how it could, but didn't want to take a chance that somehow it did come loose and worked its way into the cooling system and clogging it ("...the Titanic is unsinkable!!"). Thanks for all the replies. Rick |

I never really thought about it much. Yes, it's a loose fit and when things ar OK it does nothing. Wasn't there though a batck of impellors a few years ago where the central splined metal bit came loose from the rubber impellor ? If that jappened, I imagine the metal piece could ride outwards on the pump shaft and score/ write off the pump housing. With the disc in place, there would be no damage if that happened. Damage limitation design by VP ? |
