Post subject:  Thremostat change.......while boats in water?
So my port side engine is running cool in my vista, and my first thought is to change the thermostat. Today after I ordered the part, I got to thinking of the job ahead of me to do the swap, and it dawned on me that if I open up my cooling system I'm going to be allowing water to rush in. I keep the boat at the marina and I don't have a trailer. Can this job be done while the boats in?

Not an issue, it's above the waterline. No water comes in. I've done my impeller and thermostat while in the water.

Yep I've done it a number of times, just keep the raw water intake hose above the water line, you can get one of those wood plugs they sell to plug up through hulls and put it in the hose to be on the safe side.

Did mine the other day, no water. The point where the thermostat is located is above the water line. Think about it like a drinking straw in a glass. The water won't flow up.

But even if you did open it directly the amount of water isn't that great. It's not going to be a fire house of a gusher. Sure, it's a lot of water, but not like a busted pipe in a submarine movie. When diagnosing my overheating problem I popped the cover on the strainer and fished out the basket looking for obstructions. Yes, the water started flowing but in the minute or so I had the strainer open it was only a few gallons, tops. The bilge pump handled it easily. I only did it the lazy way because the starboard seacock valve is a pain in the ass to reach in the 348).
