I have a 1993 Four Winns Freedom inboard/outboard OMC engine and am finding that at 3/4 throttle after a few minutes the boat starts to loose power, not stop, just loose power. Then after several minutes it picks back up. I have put in fresh gasoline thinking it might be bad gas and I have changed the fuel filter (the one that looks like a small oil fitter canister) but the same problem.

Any recommendations as I a relatively new to boating?

Thanks,
Jim

3.0 L engine

3.0 L engine.

Replaced the spark plugs on July 1st with a marked improvement.
Does this therefore look more like electrical problems and not bad gasoline or water in the gas?

Should I replace the wire harness, distributor cap, points, condenser (if there is one)?

Thanks,
jim

- UPDATE - Sorry read the first email and not your second.

I had a problem similar in which the weight of the lanyard on the kill switch was enough to kill the boat when we went over large wakes. Dead, and then it would start right up. Perhaps it's related?

Also, I assume there is no alarm sound when this occurs, if there is - I'd check the level of the oil in the engine as that can cut off the enginer power and forces the engine RPM's back down to to idle in launch situations as the oil pools to the back of the motor. Once the oil settles the boat seems to have power again. have you checked it?

As a former 3.0 owner...

Rebuild the carb.
