I know these are hard to diagnose from online, but I figure it is a common issue. The noise almost sounds like a bearing and it starts on start up and when in idle. It gets louder when we engage and even louder when we go faster (went back to the dock at 15-20MPH). I checked the fluids as always and it ws good. I am taking it in to the shop this week, but am worried it is something major. The pressures are all good and it is best heard when standing in the water and you can feel unusual viabration where the motor mounts on the boat. 150 hours Any thoughts? I am a bit peeved since we won't be able to use it on July 4th! thx, Volvo Penta 4.3GXI |

u-joints and/or gimbal bearing. Those would likely fail after only 150 hours due to water intrusion, probably from a failed boot. If your situation is similar to around here, the biggest issue you will have is getting a mechanic to find the time getting you back on the water before the Holiday. Good luck. |

It does seem likely that the noise is either the gimbals bearing or ujoints. With a boat that new it pretty much has to be water intrusion. This is why maintenance wise it's a good idea to remove the drive at the end of each season and check for water intrusion and for wear in the bearing and ujoints. I had to replace the bellows once and the gimble bearing in ten years of use. |

I you find one that can get you bank on the water by the 4th give me their name! My boat as pretty much been in the shop since May 1st and it looks like we're in real danger of missing the 4th - one of our biggest boating days each year. There is a chance we'll get it back - but the last 2 times we only got about an hour of use each time. |

Thanks guys! If it is a G bearing and / or u-joint, any ideas on cost? We have used the boat 35 hours this season and that is just May and June.........not bad so far. |

Having a shop do the repair, figure on $300+ for gimble bearing, alignment and fluid. If also U-joints, add about $200 more. |

Thanks Cap'n! Sad to say, anytime I can get out of a repair on the boat for under $800, I am surprised. Cap'n Morgan wrote: Having a shop do the repair, figure on $300+ for gimble bearing, alignment and fluid. If also U-joints, add about $200 more.

My 2008 H240 with about 30 hours experienced the same problem. It turned out to be the gimble bearing. |

My repair place said they can get me in tomorrow and will try to get it fixed the same day! I use them for storage and all, so he moved me up the list...."no charge." He said it sounded like u-joints due to the louder noise when I cut the wheel either way. I will report back with actuals... ![]() thanks for all the help! |
