Great evening up the river grilling out at the quarry. Great trip up and boat ran like a charm. As we are leaving, buddy take us right over the sand bar and sucks up a nice amount of dirt. Yep, temp starts to rise. We ran on plane (3,000 rpm 32 mph)until it hit red. (getting dark and we were WAY up river). Stopped at marina and fueled up and let motor cool. Pump seemed to work a little and ran just below red if we were on a quick no wake speed. Had engine compartment open all the time to help with cooling. Last few miles, gauge was in the bottom of the red, water hose on motor partially collapsed, and you could tell is was running hot. Put the boat in the in/out bay with engine hatch open. Will call shop Monday AM. Other than the impeller which I know is shot, how bad did I break it. No noticeable oil in bilge or on motor so hopefully no cracked block. At all times I could still touch the motor with my hand without burning it.

I didn't want to be on the river at night so I chose the safety of my passengers over the dumb move of keep running the boat.

Best case? Worse case?

IMO,
T-stat, impeller and flush. I would also run a garden hose and back-flush anything out you can get to. After that I would run a compression check. You may have still warped the heads, but hopefully not.

if you warped the heads or burnt the exhaust riser gaskets you will know pretty quick once its running again. At idle it will start to skip due to the plugs getting water on them. But as walt said, i would consider backflushing the cooling system out to get all the crap out of it.

I would be more worried about long term damage than the short term band-aid fix you may get at Barrett's.
Engines do not like to run very long at all in an overheat state.

I'll know soon enough. My pennance is 2 weeks without the boat. I'm having them do the basic impeller, t-stat, and flush. If I think more issues are out there, I know of a few boat motor guys in the area that will do a more complete job. Cross your fingers for me.

Worst? Warped a head, or headgasket. Not a BIG deal on a 454.. heads are around $700 each

Have to wait until middle of next week for an update. They are backed up. May try to use my motorcycle or golf clubs this weekend if I can find them...

Check the water pick up grill on drive...mine had debris that was stopping it up...never ran hot but sure could have been problem....some quick simple things over what's been said include draining water from block and manifolds....use wire probe to make sure any debris washes out.....I also strongly suggest an oil change now...at high temps oil breaks down.

Took it out tonight, made it just past the no-wake area and I watched the temp gauge rise. Turned around and by the time I was back to the marina it was almost to the red. They replaced the impeller, flushed the system (found the two broken fins from the impeller), and ran it on the hose. Unfortunately, they didn't sea trial it and once on plane, it heated up. I'm hoping it may be a thermostat issue and not a fuel pump. It seems to be pumping a little bit and it did flow nicely on the hose.

Any ideas?
