Post subject:  t-stat -- max temp?

I have a 2004 268 Vista 5.7 Gi engine. After running the boat this year without a t-stat, i decide to install a t-stat last night. Before I installed the t-stat the water temp gauge never rose above 175 degrees. After I installed the t-stat the temp climb to 175 degree in about 10 minutes of idling in the slip. The water temp is about 83 degrees in the bay. After 15 minutes it was still climbing. I temp gauge read between 175 and 200. I shut down the engine. I thought the max temp with a t-stat installed was around 175. Is that correct? The reason I was running without a t-stat was that after installing a new one last year I have got the same results. The temp would climb to about 200 (then I shut it down). I did replace the implellor last year. The engine runs fine (except I am sure it is not as fuel efficient) without the t-stat. So now I am wondering if the water pump is not pumping correctly. Or if it is possible that I bought two bad t-stats.

I like to take it out for a run and seen what the temperature gauge reads while I am on plan.

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Could be a failing impeller. I'd check that if you have not already.

well the nice thing about VP's is that I don't have to take it out of the water to check the impellor... :)

The max temp with the t-stat installed is 175-180 max. Yours is definitely too hot. As noted check the whole cooling system, impeller to risers. If you are in salt/brackish and those are the OE risers, they and the manifolds are past due.

After two 90 degree plus days in the engine compartment, I finally (I think) figured out my over heating issue. It wasn't a bad thermostat, it wasn't a bad or failing impeller, it wasn't clogged manifolds or risers. It is, I think, a bad temperature sensor. I finally put a heat gun to the engine and worked my way up through the engine, hitting all vital point. While be temperature gauge read 150, no where on the engine (using the heat gun) measured over 125 degrees.

So now my question... which part do I need?

Volvo parts have three possible parts listed.
Temperature sensor 872068
Sensor 3852029
or
Switch 3850397

I have a 2004 268 Vista 5.7 Gi-EF...

Thanks in advance...

I ended up replacing the temperture sensore

The temperture now seems normal...
