Post subject: | Volvo Penta 5.0 Starter Part Number? |
Hey guys, The starter in my boat has gone bad and I need to replace it. Looking online, I just can't figure out the exact part number I need as there seem to be several different types of engines. The boat is a 1996 Four Winns U-17 and has the 5.0 Fuel Injected motor. Are all of the starters standard? Also, would an automotive 5.0 starter fit it just fine? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Jesse |

I have had good experience with Marine Parts Express, 1-877-621-2628...when the prompt comes for salesman, press 6 for Brody. Just tell him your boat/engine/drive combo and he will find the part you need. |

Which motor, blue oval (dist in front) or bow tie (dist in rear), both were used by Volvo/omc You have to use a marine starter that is ignition protected or you risk an explosion |

Got the starter changed out. What a pain in the behind. It was located on the starboard, aft corner of the engine underneath. The water cooling lines were right in the road so they had to come out and then it was basically a blind job trying to position it up underneath and line up the flange. Not too fun but it works great and the old one was in bad shape. Thanks again for the help. |

Do your hands look like you wrestled a tiger? Good job getting her running again I know how it feels to be without my boat for some time because of a stupid starter. ![]() |

This is why I am always complaining about impractical boat designs, there is no reason why it needs to be that way. In the older boats you can get at the starter in 15 min. I modified the back of my boat so the rear bench seat is in 2 pieces and the bulkhead between the engine and seat is also. It all comes apart with bolts and wingnuts. 15 min the seat and bulkhead are out, 15 min the starter is out. I could do it with the boat on the mooring if I had do. No wrestling in a black hole cursing why they have molded in 'glass from the top cap all the way down to the deck. This is why I restored my old '88 instead of getting a newer one, unless you go up to a 240 the engine compartments are terrible for access. And even then, it is not much bigger at all than the older 200s because of all the wasted space. |
