Hey everyone, I am new to this forum and could really use some help! I own a yr 2000 horizon 200 and need a new engine. The boat has its original volvo penta I/O 250hp duoprop but it is totaled and I would like to replace it with an engine that is not a volvo pinta.

Q: what are my options for a new engine that is not a volvo penta?

Q: I would like a mercruiser and have read this is possible. Which mercruiser engines would work/fit in my boat?

Q:any other info about changing out engines on this boat to an engine other than volvo penta would be greatly appreciated!

If this helps: I wouldn't mind spending the money for a new engine (as opposed to used) because the rest of the boat is in great condition.
THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP AND ADVICE!

New & rebuilt engines are available from a number of sources. Are the drive & coupler gone too, and if not why would you want to go to the trouble of changing brands? The engines themselves are identical and the VP drive is at least as good. The Duoprop is an outstanding drive.

Assuming the drive is still good, I'd put a 300hp 5.7 in it and go boating.

Volvo Penta and Mercruiser engines are both made by General Motors. They're the same. How does a boat owner looking for an engine not know this?

Also there is no such thing as a "totaled" engine. Usually a rod breaks or bearing spins, but everything else is fine. So you buy something called a "short block" or "rotating assembly" and just replace that.

Double check but I'm 99.9999999% sure this year automotive 305 is what VP/MC used. Car/boat same engine. $625

To pay an honest shadetree mechanic to switch it all out you're probably looking at another $1000 or so for the labor. I rebuilt my first 305 when I was 15 with my father, it's monkey work. With a forklift and hand tools a mechanic could start the project on a Friday and have you on the water for Sunday Funday.
