Anyone have any thoughts/knowledge regarding this trailer for a '03 180 Freedom? Boat has this trailer with it, but trailer doesn't have brakes and I'm a little leary of hauling a 2300 lb boat around in the hills without some sort of additional brake capability.

It appears that a lot of you really hate the F/Winns trailers...is the Magic Tilt a good make?? Clueless here and could use y'alls (yeah, it's a Texas thing) opinion. :)

Thanks to all,
Paul

I always thought it was "y'all" when addressing one person, and "all y'all" when addressing more than one

We Yankees like "youse" that is the plural of you, if you are from NYC espcially the boro of Brooklyn!
About the trailer, why not just put brakes on it, does the axle have brake flanges? if not, some shops can weld them on for you. I didn't have brakes on the single axle trailer for my old 200 and had a new axle made by Champion Trailers in Slidell, Louisiana and put in the brake system at the same time. Made trailering a lot less stressful.

Don't know if brake flanges are there or not and don't like the way boat sits on trailer to begin with.

I'm going to start looking for trailer options with brakes and sell this MagicTilt one. Any one have suggestions for good/sounds trailer w/brakes. I'm in Houston area and know McClain is local, so I'll chat with them. Boat is a 2003 180 Freedom.

Any suggestions would be appreciated...remember, must have brakes cause I'd hate to see that baby pass me up going down a hill, lol.

Well my galvanized 1994 Load Rite is still holding together (salt water use) but I rebuilt it about 3 years ago with new springs, axle, tires, and added the brakes. Around here we see a lot of Ventures, Load Rites and some 5 Starrs (cheaper version of Load Rite). Most people here use roller trailers because of the tide changes (6-8 ft depth difference between high and low). Any trailer with a Gross Vehicle Weight rating of 3000 lbs or more should come with brakes, but most people will tell you trailer brake systems tend to be trouble some because of corrosion. Now the better companies will use Kodiak stainless brakes, although I have gotten reasonable service out of my galvanized drums because I keep the boat on a mooring and the trailer only goes in salt about 2 times per year. If I launched all the time here I'd probably gone to a stainless disc system.
For a boat that weight, I'd probably go with the highest load capacity single axle trailer you can get (some go up to 3600 lbs, because they use a 6 lug axle instead of 5, 15 in tires, and can also use bigger brakes as well).
