hello, i am new to my 1996 238 vista. i took her for the maiden ride & found the shift lever taking more muscle than i would like to use. the throttle only was free & easy but went back to into gear & it was diffently more muscle needed. is this nornmal?

thanks,

May need to replace your shift cable. It isn't unusual for them to wear out. I just got new ones but haven't put them on the boat yet.

disconnect the cable at the drive and check the shifter feel at the throttle, if still stiff, replace the cable, shifter cable is pretty cheap and easy to replace. Cables get beat up where they bend in the rear of the boat. There is a number on the end within 12 inches from the end that you will need to get a replacement unless you know the exact length....
if it moves freely then check the movement of the shifter mech at the drive if that if tight then your problem if in the drive side..

Same issue here. Does anyone know the part number to order for the shift cable and how much they run? I have the 5.7 Gxi with the DP outdrive.

like I said you need either the exact length or the number on the cable.
I have called FW in the past for a cable for a particular drive/boat and they couldnt give me an exact replacement without the number or length,

If The Kid is around, he will tell you.

as far as how much.
on my last boat it ran around 38 bucks or so from Four Winns... like I said they are not too expensive.
i am sure for a 278 it will be up a little more from that but If I had to guess around 60 bucks

If you are getting a new cable, go for the Teleflex Xtreme. A couple of bucks more, but much better quality than the original OEM Teleflex one and will last a lot longer. General opinion seems to be the OEM one has a life of about 4 years. Mine lasted 3...

+1 on the Extreme. It became standard equipment from FW in (I think) 2006.
