While doing some work on my trailer I noticed a crack in the rubber coating (I can see the braided metal underneath the coating) of the brake line as it comes through the swing away tongue. Brakes still work and no leak of fluid can be seen. Does the rubber coating serve any purpose other than abrasion protection for the braided flexible line? Does this need replaced right away?

Most of that rubber coating fell off mine a couple of years ago. (Florida sun)
I have seen no indication of anything else happening.
It is just a bit unsightly.

I agree it's not a sign of imminent failure, but it is an indication of wear, and IMO it's telling you it's time to be replaced.
