Righto fellas, here are some pics of the brake upgrade to disc. Done in a day. All galvanised and stainless steel fittings. New Alco coupling with yes, handbrake. Great difference and no problems for years (if washed and sprayed frequently) Pics not the best. Will do some more tomorrow. Bottom 3 photos are old drum system,

Was not sure modifying FW trailers was possible. The mob here in Sydney do heaps of them. Cheaper than having to buy a new or second hand trailer. Very happy. Happy Boating chaps in winter.....

Looks good Giffo, great result!!! I rebuilt my old Sea Ray trailer and installed disk brakes with the override coupling onto it. Easy job as so many are done, most of the parts are off the shelf now. I did the job myself with new 2Ton Axle, brakes, springs, wheels, tyres, mud guards, coupling and hydraulic lines. I also sanded and repainted the frame at the same time, and re carpeted the bunks. I got change from $1000... but lost a lot of skin! it was a pain in the @$$ and took 2 weeks working after hours and both weekends. Most of the mild steel trailers from boat manufacturers seem to be built to a price and designed to last just a few years, add salt water and it is even less. |

Griffo New brakes look great. Old ones were not even galvanized. Drums plain painted cast iron. I use all galvanized backing plates and zinc or cad plated drums and they look way better than those. Drums can work in salt if they are made out of the right materials. I change the wheel cylinders every 4 seasons. The drums are 10 years old. I took a good look at those pix on my home computer...they used the cheapest painted drum brakes they could find. The ones you can buy for $55 each backing plate here are galvanized, with stainless springs, and an aluminum wheel cylinder. This is why drum brakes get a bad reputation, cheap materials. That would work OK on a cargo trailer that never goes in the water. http://www.pacifictrailers.com/Trailer- ... 0-x-2-1/4/ http://www.pacifictrailers.com/boat-tra ... ng-plates/ I guess FW was too cheap to even put these on, that would have at least lasted 4-5 years maybe longer. You can see how cheap FW really is, if these parts were too expensive for them to use on their custom trailer LOL.... Drum brakes have 2 inherent advantages over discs, one they are self engergizing and take less actuator force to stop the trailer two, the strong return springs mean less drag and heat than with discs. Yes discs are easier to service, and easier to wash out. But unless you go for the full stainless rotor package they rust bad here. |

Your right there Lou. Good quality drum brakes can work. People would most likely pay the extra for quality trailers. Less pain in the future. Goes without saying. Nearly ALL trailers in Oz are discs and even then, quality is important. I am happy now as the rest of my FW trailer is in good condition. Just have to look after her after touching salt water. I do like the Aussie/EU cable operated actuator system, because the thing that screws up most trailer brakes is the same for drums and discs, water gets in and seizes the piston in either the drum cylinder or disc caliper piston. If you keep all the pivots lubed up on the cable system it seems less likely to seize up. For a trailer a cable system seems like a less trouble way to go. For heavier trailers, don't they require electric over hydraulic though? |

As you stated, As long as they are lubed) (Depends on weight, yes)For a trailer a cable system seems like a less trouble way to go. An AGM of >2000kg requires electric brakes. <2000kg, mechanical override is sufficient. |
