I'm looking for a cheap solution. I want to transport my boat one way 15 miles and dry store it on the trailer at a marina for the summer. They do unlimited launches etc. Just call 30 minutes in advance. $150/month.

Would the $85 Walmart tire/rim combo be okay for that? My current tires are not the correct load rating and dangerous even for the 15 mile journey.

I use the Walmart tire/rim combo on my enclosed trailer hauling a race car and they work fine. Good for about 3 years before UV light causes them to come apart. Florida is tough on tires.
I have not used them on the boat trailer as mine are 6 lug D rated (2540 lbs each) 8 ply and Walmart doesn't carry that type.

That's promising. So just use tire covers?

Is it not cheaper to just replace the tires with the proper load rated ones?
Are the rims shot OR is Walmart that cheap for the combo?
Tires these days don't seem to last long and they start to dry rot even here up north.

For some stupid reason a previous owner installed undersized 13in rims. Finding property rated tires is really rare and more expensive than new 15in rims/tires.

7000lb trailer with 4000lb tires with a 3800lb dry boat. Dumb. They look flat with 65psi. Popped one off the bead 2 out of the 3 times I towed it.

Gotcha. What brand tires are mounted on the rims? Painted steel, galvanized, or aluminum rims?

Mismatched class c on 13" galvanized. I'll probably mount two as spares on the trailer.

Ric, I realize that you don't trailer regularly but I would highly recommend equipping the trailer as it should be for the boat. From a liability standpoint, you don't want to wreck the boat and trailer, let alone donate the boat, beemer(bimmer, sorry), and everything else you own to someone else when things go wrong. There will always be another trip with the boat on the trailer.

Walmart's brand of 15" rims/tires bring the load rating up to 7000lb (almost at the trailer's limits). I have not weighed my setup on the scales yet but I'm guessing fully loaded boat+trailer is no more than 6000lb. Plenty safe.

The Chap 215 ssi is a BIG boat. Bigger than a mid 2000's era 225 FW Sundowner. They didn't count the swim platform in the official LOA like Four Winns. It's the size of a 248 Vista with a tad less headroom. I can't stand in the cabin but by the door it's about 5 feet. Has more headroom in the V-berth than a 248, I can sit comfortably being 6'2 without hitting my head. Laying down for the night I can stretch out without hitting.

From what I am understanding if your putting 15" rims on it and bringing the load rating to the correct amount I don't see why buying from Walmart makes a difference. They must be a brand name, Walmart does not make tires. Go for the best deal. Just don't mix tire types like radials and bias ply or different sizes.
It's hard to find tires online. Shipping kills you. I looked a couple years ago for a spare and I ended up going locally. So if your Walmart has a tire center you will probably save a little.

My locaL Walmart carries the 5 lug trailer tires premounted for $89. Can't beat that price even on a tire without a rim. So I usually just scrap my old rims and get the combo.
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Hi-Run-ST-Bias-Tire-with-Wheel-Assembly-ST205-75D15-6-Ply-5L-for-Boat-Trailers/23573685

Unfortunately, my boat trailer is a single axel with 6 lugs and Walmart doesn't carry those tires or combo.

Well, I ordered. $380 shipped to store for all 4 tires/rim combo. I was walking around the neighborhood tonight and down at the dock the weeds are starting to take over my slip finally. There's a huge line out in the lake. I might have to sneak on another ramp somewhere else on the lake to get my boat out as mine is full of crap. All the local drunks that are on my boat every weekend are sad and upset, telling me summer just isn't going to be the same with my boat gone.

It will be better (well, for me). :)

$380 for 4 sounds like a great deal! have fun exploring. I read your other post and sounds like you are better off leaving that lake and having fun else where without the headache.

I just went through this last weekend and I can tell you I paid significantly north of that sum for tires alone. I was scared by some, about Chinese made tires unwrapping or blowing at high speed and high load. I will be curious to see how long these will last. What matters is that you are no longer an easy target for a personal injury attorney. My 210 Horizon is just under 4000lb dry also. Lets make sure we share at the end of the season who still has the same set of four. It will probably be you.
