I have a tandem axle trailer with the rear axle having drum brakes. I noticed that the left rear axle temp was cool compared to the right. Tore apart the RR last night and it looked good except the endplay seemed a little too much. I could rotate the slotted position on the nut 3 or 4 more places before it tightened up. Everything looked good with the bearings. Adjusted up the brakes (drum) on both sides and it still is about the same temperature. Right seems normal and the left seems cool. Brakes feel like they are working normally.

Any ideas?

If in doubt about how tight your bearings are or should be, refer to http://www.championtrailers.com/techsup ... adbearings.

Where and how are you measuring the difference?

No measurement, just by feel. I useally tighten the nut down and then back off about a 1/4 turn. This was more like 1/2 a turn.

Towed the boat again last night and the first part of the trip was very warm to hot on the RR. Back to normal temps on the return trip.

Purchased a new brake assembly for the RR. I am now thinking that the brake is hanging up sometimes. I may still replace the bearings on this side as well. I think they are OK but with the end play being high, I think this may be cheap insurance. Planning a 1000 mile trip the 1st week of July. Want to make sure I spend it on the boat and not in a hotel waiting for trailer repairs in Canada.

As cheap as bearings are, I'm surprised people don't replace them more often. But, if you replace the bearings you should replace the races as well - a little more work.
