Post subject:  Spare Tire Question

I have a 2001 Horizon 230 Painted Trailer in need of a spare tire. The Four Winns site lists the specs as 6 Lug with 6" pattern for 2001 and before, but a 6 Lug with 5.5" pattern for trailers after 2001. I have looked on the Internet and called several local places that have the 6 Lug with 5.5" pattern, but no one has a 6" pattern. The Spare Parts listing on the Four Winns site appears to list the same part # (005-1092) as the wheel for trailers that say 5.5" and 6" pattern in their specifications.

Unfortunately, I will not have access to my trailer until this weekend to measure. Does anyone know if there is in fact two different tires or are they the same. If anyone has researched this before and can give any advice, I would appreciate it.

Also, I am looking for a spare tire mount for a 6-Lug spare (the 4 and 5 lugs appear to be common, but the 6 lug is not as common).

Thanks,

Unfortunately, I'd recommend not doing anything until you can measure your trailer. Sounds like there's a chance either one could end up being wrong.

I've noticed also that 6-lug mounts are harder to find. I see a couple of similar ones at:

John...did you ever figure out the size of rim pattern you need? Also, I am away from our boat as well. What is the tire size we have as well if you know.

Thanks.

I haven't purchased anything yet, but from my measurements, it is a 5.5" Pattern.

I've checked a couple local places, but most don't carry the 6-lug. The tire shop that my brother uses for his trailers can get a spoked rim, but not the modular one. Northern Tool has this wheel (http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200244824_200244824) that appears to be an exact match. Even though it says it is for an ST205, I believe it will work for an ST225, but I haven't confirmed that yet. My local Northern Tool sells this wheel for around $48 and I can get the local tire shop to mount a tire on it for around $75 making the total for the spare around $125. As soon as it is convienent to go pickup the wheel and take it to the tire shop, I plan to go this route because I will probably let them replace all four tires soon and then they will all match.

Northern Tool also sells a tire/wheel combo (http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200321553_200321553). They don't have the wheel pictured, but assuming they are using the wheel listed above, this should be an exact match. This option would cost between $160-$190 (my local Northern Tool doesn't carry it and shipping is around $30).

Thanks John...I stumbled across this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/15-BOAT-UTILITY-STOCK-TRAILER-5-6-LUG-WHEELS-TIRES_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ66481QQihZ009QQitemZ190213001866QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

I know the rim is not the same but I am going to put a cover on it anyway. Plus, my spare will only be used to get me to a local tire shop this should do the trick. What do you think?

Seems like a decent price for a spare, even with shipping included. I paid $115 for mine at a local shop, which seemed like a good price.

Well I went ahead and purchased a tire from the link I posted above. I will let you all know what I think when it arrives.

Chinese made tire on that rim. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Should work for an emergency spare, the price is right.

Just to keep everyone updated, here was my spare tire solution:

I went to the local Northern Tool and purchased this wheel for $48.

http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200244824_200244824

I sent to the local tire shop and purchased this tire for $72 + $10 mounting on my wheel:

http://www.hankooktireusa.com/product/tire_detail.asp?pid=504

I order this spare tire mount from my local boat shop for $33.

http://www.iboats.com/Tie_Down_Engineering_High_Mount_Tire_Carrier/dm/category_id.217607--view_id.40425

Total: $163 + Tax for Wheel, Tire, and Trailer Mount. I plan to mount it on the trailer Memorial Day weekend.

As I was posting this thread, I became a little concerned about the tire. When I was linking to the Hankook tire site, it doesn't say anything about this being a "trailer tire" yet the local tire shop assured me that it was. For a spare, I'm sure it will be ok, but would I want to get 4 more and use full time on the trailer.

Thanks,

If it's a trailer tire, it'll say "ST" on it, regardless of brand. It stands for "special trailer."

Another update in case someone is looking at this for future reference:

I took the Hankook tire back and they swapped it for an ST rated tire.

Also, the spare time mount that I purchased will only work on a 4" trailer rail and the Four Winns trailer is around 5-6". I ended up mounting it on the tongue (which I have seen many people do) and it looks pretty good. It gets slightly in the way, but very manageable.

I forgot to take a picture, but will post one later.
