Post subject:  H190 + Minivan = Bad Idea
I really need to carry my camcorder more often when I go out, I had the perfect chance to see a minivan attempting to pull an H190 out of the water with the H190 winning the battle. While walking up the hill to the lot, you could hear tires screaming and see clouds of smoke and sense the van was going in. A friend of mine and five others needed to push the van up the launch so it wouldn't end up in the water. When I came back down, smoke was still hanging around.

I dunno, I used to have an AWD Ford Aerostar that had a towing capacity of 4400 lbs. It towed a 17' open bow like it wasn't there.

Newer subframe minis NO

The good old 1/2 ton chassis minivans like the Astro are a thing of the past. They did the job nice and safe but at 14 mpg.....

Yeah I meant the FWD "true" minivans. I think of the Aerostar as something sort of in between a minivan and a van. Everyone has always raved about how well the Aerostar did hauling and towing.

No, but they were back at it Friday afternoon :shock: . I saw them coming down the hill as we were heading out and wanted to be as far away as possible. I truly expect the launch to be closed one of these days because there's an overloaded minivan in the drink.

I feared this exact thing happening when we had a minivan and were looking at boats and why I bought the Explorer.

front wheel drive is good for certain things, towing up a ramp is not one of them (weight transfer works against fwd in that circumstance).
I like my old school Jeep Grand Cherokee with Selectrac 4x4. No waiting for 'on demand' electronic systems to engage 4x4 while you are spinning wheels, you back down, it's already in 4x4 and stays in 4x4 as long as YOU want it to, not when the electronics decide it's OK. Never a problem even on a wet sandy ramp.

I saw a quest pulling a good size double axle camper the other day. The camper as easily 8' longer than the van and the hitch (if you want to call the conglomeration of pieces a hitch) was about 3 inches off the ground and the vans rear wheels were doing the peekaboo trick from under the wheel wells - look no wheels, bump, look wheel, ah its gone again.. :mrgreen:

And the worst part is that they probably spoke with a dealer, who told them it would tow it because it falls within the rated tow capacity. Boat ramps are no place for marginal tow vehicles.

Does the Scout have an AMC 258 inline 6? I have the old school 4.0 in my 98. When I was growing up in the late 60s a good friend's dad had a 69 International Travelall with a 304 AMC V-8 and a three speed shift on the column.
Too bad 4x4 is getting dumbed down for the masses. The only Jeep left with selectable 4x4 is the Wrangler, all the others have on demand systems now.

A dealer would never do such a thing as put a customer at risk to sell a boat. I wonder if they come pull you out of the water :mrgreen:

Friend of mine pulls his H180 with a Kia minivan with no problems at all. Van doesn't sag and pulls it out of the water pretty easy. It does have a V6. I must admit at first I didn't think it would pull it out, but it does and pretty easy actually. Of course the launch we use is really nice and flat. On a steep hill might be a problem.
