Post subject:  Bearing Cover

On my single axle FW trailer for my 2000 20' Horizon, I replaced my bearing & seals. I ended up losing the bearing cover resulting in grease splattered everywhere.

Does anyone have a suggestion of where I can find a replacement cover that will fit?

Thanks,
Rich

The type of bearing cap depends on the type of axle. If there is a grease zerk on the end of the axle, it would be something like this: https://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Bearin ... -DCRP.html

If there is no grease zerk on the end of the axle, you probably need a "Bearing Buddy" style like this: https://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Bearin ... 1980A.html

The links are from etrailer.com, but you should be able to find other local and online sources.

You may also look at the one on the other side of the trailer to compare. I am guessing your trailer has the type in the first link above, but you need to check to see. You will also need to measure the inside diameter of the hub where the cap goes to get the right size. Hope this helps.

Is it the dust cap or just the rubber insert?

I got tired of the insert coming out an bought new inserts and put bearing buddy covers over the dust
caps. What causes this is the grease expands from heat and pushes the cover off.

What I’ve done to prevent that from happening is to scoop out the excess grease that’s in the tin cover before putting the rubber cap in the center. Be careful because the edges of the tin cover can be sharp. I take a paper towel and bend it into a V shape and just scoop out the excess around the grease zerk. This allows the grease to expand as it warms up without popping off the rubber plug.
Also keep in mind the tin covers are different sizes depending on the capacity of the axle. If you have a 6 lug axle the tin covers are larger than those on the more common 5 lug axles.
