What kind of tires are best for towing? I realize there are many options, including bias vs. radial, but I have read many scary stories about certain brands and want to know everyones experience... sorry if this has been covered before but I can't find anything anywhere! |

Trailer tires are typically bias ply. Just be sure you watch the load range of the tire ... vs ... your loaded weight (boat, trailer, accessories, fuel, water .... etc.). If you wish to be overly cautious (if there is such a thing), just go up to the next higher load rating. Most trailer tire failures are due to under inflation, bad bearings and dragging brakes. All of which increase the tire temperature. Keep them properly inflated and all other things in-line and you should be fine with any quality tire. |

My previous and new Goodyear Marathons are radials. Be sure to shop around, I saved $100 by making a few phone calls. Here's a recent discussion: http://www.smwebhead.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2268&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=marathon |

It seems as though there isn't a tire that is recommended by all. Kind of disappointing. I don't understand why there is so much attention given to tires for your car, but trailer tires seem to be rubbish. It seems to me that it could be a lot more dangerous for a trailer tire to blow than a car tire, you'd think manufacturers would spend more time making quality products. ![]() |

The problem is, trailer tires live a 100 times harder life than car tires do, especially on multi-axle trailers. The only hope is to take perfect care of them, and sometimes even that isn't enough. |

Most trailer tires today are radials. If you are buying them for your four winns boat, I recomend either the Goodyear marathons, or the carlisle of sufficent load range/weight rating. I have run the goodyear marathons on a couple trailers, and currently have the Carlisle on boat trailer, load range E (2835 lbs/tire), these have proven to have a heavy enough side wall for the scrubbing abuse they must endure. I do recomend them. You will get some bad reveiws of carlisles, but I believe that most RV/boat owners put to small a weight rating tire on there trailers and complain when the tire gives out. just my 2 cents. |
