Hi
Has anyone added brakes to a H180 trailer.My 2006 trailer has the 5 wire plug,but I guess brakes were a option.I was wondering about electric brakes with the water?

I personally wouldnt put electric brakes on a boat trailer, unless your are talking electric over hydraulic (which I am pretty sure your not). Why not do surge brakes. I have them on our trailer and they work great. In fact I would bet that I can stop with the boat just a good as without. Thats with a tadem disc setup.

Do you have a surge brake coupler on the trailer

It appears to be a surge coupler with a extra bolt because it does not move.The only reason I would go electric is cost,I have a brake controller in my truck.I have yet to do any pricing but I know the from pass experience drum electric are about $200.00 Can. per wheel.The only draw back I see is I would be diconnecting the plug before backing in to the lake.My electrical plug is usually disconnected anyway I store and launch on private property.

If your trailer already has a surge brake actuator (coupler), you might need nothing more than a kit that includes these: http://www.tiedown.com/avented.html

If you don't have a surge brake actuator, you might be ahead to go with this: http://www.tiedown.com/aventedkit.html . That actuator should already have the backup solenoid in it that your 5th wire would connect to.

Note, you'll have people tell you to avoid Tie Down products like the plague. Personally, they've been the most problem-free components on my trailer.

I will have to take a closer look at the coupler.It looks like the one in the second link but mine does not have a master cyl/actuator.It looks like the calipers shown in the first link use older style GM pads.

Good eye! They use 1990 Cavalier pads.
