While i was putting on the last of my wax (under the trailer banging my head every so often)! i noticed on my support bunks that every one had loose washers on them where the wood mounts to the metal upright supports. anyhow... before i tighten them all up, i was wondering if this is supposed to be this way to allow a little "give" or slight movement to help when putting the boat on and off the trailer. (they all appear to have locking nylon insert nuts on them so i'm not worried about them falling off.) - bk

As the wood compresses over time they become loose. You should be able to tighten them without the carrage bolt spinning. On my 1999 they used a torque washer with little spikes at the head of the bolt that stops them from spinning when they use a nyloc nut.

Hope this helps,
Ross

Yep, is just a case of the wood in the bunks shrinking over time. Quite normal!

THANKS- good to hear it's just a tighten-up job. :)

Think they get loose from the vibration while towing - something that you should check at least once per year. Have seen cases where all of the nuts fall off & when the person backed the trailer in to retrieve the boat the bunk floated away. Not a good thing.

It's just from shrinkage and compression. Theoretically after a few tightenings they should stay put.

Do you think they know about, uh, shrinkage?

Must be the cold water...!

Edit: They call it "Spanner Water" - tightens your nuts for you...
